Chinese criminals will find safe haven in Australia if treaty fails to pass parliament
- FOREIGN Minister Julie Bishop has warned Australia would become a safe haven for Chinese criminals without an extradition treaty.
Ms Bishop’s comments came after Australia’s Extradition Treaty with China, signed in September 2007, was killed off, as it was about to be ratified, in an eleventh hour move by Liberal backbenchers, led by defector Cory Bernardi, in conjunction with Labor.
In an exclusive interview with The Daily Telegraph, a defiant Foreign Minister said Australia should not become a safe haven for criminals of any country.
